The Chinese tech giant, Huawei, and Southern Korean carrier, LG Uplus jointly announced the establishment of the Gbps 5G commercial network yesterday at MWC 2019 in Barcelona.

Having deployed more than 10,000 5G sites spanning across South Korea, the companies say that the network will provide continuous 5G coverage; with the average data rate in Gangnam District, Seoul, exceeding 900Mbps.

At the LG booth, LG Uplus and Huawei are demonstrating 5G network services including the use of ultra-HD video and virtual reality services – which both companies say will become commercial applications.

Gazing further into the 5G future at MWC, Huawei has forecasted that VR will become a “mainstream service in the 5G era,” noting that cloud VR will also become a “killer application”.

This isn’t the first deployment or trial in their several years of partnership on 5G, however. Back in November 2017, the companies completed 5G field trials in order to verify technologies including; IPTV, 4K video, dual connectivity, and inter-cell handover.

MWC 2019 is being held until February 28 in Barcelona, Spain. To learn more about the deployment or to see what Huawei are showcasing visit booth 1H50 in Fira Gran Via Hall 1, booth 3I30 in Hall 3, the Innovation City zone in Hall 4, booth 7C21 and 7C31 in Hall 7.
